Why kitchen plywood decisions go wrong
Most kitchen issues start with two mistakes:
- Wrong grade in moisture-prone areas
- Under-thickness boards for load-bearing cabinets
A modular kitchen looks premium outside, but the long-term life depends on the inside structure.
Recommended thickness by component
Use this as a practical baseline:
- Carcass sides/top/bottom: 18mm
- Shelves: 18mm preferred for stability
- Partitions: 12mm or 16mm based on design load
- Back panel: 6mm or 9mm
If cabinet width is large and heavily loaded, avoid thin shelves.
Grade selection: where BWR is enough and where BWP is safer
- General cabinet zones: good quality BWR often works well
- Sink unit and high-moisture points: BWP/Marine is safer
- Near plumbing lines: prefer higher moisture resistance
This mixed approach controls cost while protecting critical zones.
Surface and finishing decisions
Plywood is only one part. Final durability also depends on:
- Laminate thickness and quality
- Edge sealing quality
- Adhesive choice
- Hardware brand and fitting quality
Poor edge finishing can damage even good plywood.
Pre-installation checklist
Before cutting starts:
- Match grade and thickness against the approved list.
- Verify one sample sheet physically.
- Confirm sink base uses the higher moisture grade.
- Confirm hardware and board compatibility.
- Keep buffer quantity for late modifications.
Post-installation checks
- Open and close shutters multiple times
- Check shelf deflection under load
- Inspect sink base edges and joints
- Confirm all exposed edges are sealed
